ABOUT:

High school juniors and seniors are invited to apply for a free, digital journalism workshop. The virtual workshop will be taught in late July 2021. Sixteen students will be selected to participate in the 2021 Digital Journalism  | Health Equities Workshop. The application deadline is 4 p.m., Friday, July 9, 2021.

What You will Learn....
You will learn basic digital print, broadcast, photography and technology skills. Your work will be posted on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. You will also learn how journalists use drones, animation and 3-D printing.

The workshop will focus on research-based journalism - needed now more than ever. The Journalist's Resource is tagged as "Informing the news.” It is located in the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, at the Harvard Kennedy School. The Resource works with researchers from all over the world to contribute research about trending news topics.

The virtual workshop will be held at the Meharry Medical College virtual campus and you will be able to work with some of the top medical people in health equity.

The workshop topic will focus on oral health equities; specifically, how oral health affects COVID. Researchers report that people with poor oral hygiene have more difficult COVID cases and the cases last longer.

Your Coaches....
You will be taught by professional journalists and professors of journalism. Professional journalists will not only teach you journalism skills, but they will also give you a virtual tour of where they work and assist you in publishing your work online. The networking you receive, from these professionals, will be invaluable to you in your journalism career.

Professors of journalism will help you to hit the ground running and thinking when you enroll in college. All of the professors have experience teaching online. Students will be encouraged to attend a follow-up session that will focus on college preparation, selection, landing internships and a winning resume.

Your Workshop Requirements...
Workshop participants must be rising high school juniors and seniors and submit authorization forms from their high school counselor and parent(s).

Students should have a strong interest in journalism and health equities for this free journalism-training workshop.

We’re interested in students who have had some or no journalism experience. We encourage students, who have barriers to pursuing media careers, to apply to the free Workshop.

Application Process....
The application process includes your background information and  a digital skills survey. Everyone will be notified if they are a finalist or not for the Workshop.

The next step will be for you to write a very short bio.   You will be given instructions about what to include in the bio.  You will also be asked to subject a headshot in jpeg format.

Your Sponsors...
We salute our two sponsors for this important workshop, the Dow Jones News Fund I Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
